The University of Iowa community is mourning the loss of former women’s volleyball letterwinner Kari (Mueller) Pekar, who passed away following a courageous battle with cancer. Pekar, a native of Iowa City, died on June 10 at the age of 33, leaving behind family, friends, former teammates, coaches, and countless people whose lives she touched.
Pekar was a valued member of the University of Iowa women’s volleyball program, representing the Hawkeyes from 2011 through 2014. During her collegiate career, she contributed both on and off the court, earning respect for her dedication, teamwork, and commitment to the sport.
Throughout her time with the Hawkeyes, Pekar recorded 357 digs, 33 assists, and 17 service aces. Her athletic accomplishments reflected the determination and discipline she brought to every match. Beyond statistics, she was remembered as a teammate who valued the relationships built through volleyball and the shared experiences that came with competing at the collegiate level.
